Do you know that there are doctors promoting themselves as dermatologists who are not formally trained in dermatology? Yes, there are numerous family doctors, ER doctors, gynecologists, and others passing themselves off as dermatologists to unsuspecting patients. Unfortunately, many doctors have decided to jump on the cosmetic bandwagon and try to make a quick buck. And there are very few laws to prevent this type of deception. IT IS TRULY THE WILD WEST OUT THERE. That means that you as a consumer need to protect yourself by researching the background of your physician. Ask any prospective dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon the following question: In what specialty did you do your residency training? In what specialty are you board-certified? You may be surprised by what you discover. Don’t take chances. Make sure that your “dermatologist” is board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology.
